SPOILER, I'm neither a wine nor acting enthusiast/expert.
The acting feels so forced and pretentious; the protagonist, Elijah feels so emotionless half the time and doesn't have that drive and obsession, (and craziness) like Paul Giamatti from Sideways 😂 when dealing/interacting with wine.
Besides the intro, there's not even a single vineyard featured in the movie. The trip to Paris could have shown wine-making scenes like harvesting and fermenting and wine-educating scenes (history and all that) so that it at least helps the viewers understand the perspective of Elijah which could explain why he is so willing to sacrifice everything (family relationships and financial stability) for this career. This shouts lazy writing.
Don't even get started with the disappointing ending.
I would rather it end like this: Elijah learns that a master sommelier is just a name(pls don't burn/thrash me folks:) and failing the exam is not the end of the world. He takes charge of the family business and partners with Raylan and Richie to turn his old-school and rundown family-owned BBQ chain into a highly successful and modern restaurant chain; introducing his love for wine to customers while maintaining the standards of the food.
