Great show. On the edge of my seat mostly. However, SPOILER here!!... the biggest disappointment was from the biggest lie a mother can keep from her child, and when Mia finally tells Pearl the truth, to me it sounded like yes, her father was Joe Ryan, but she glossed over the fact that her biological mother was his wife. She only said his wife would have been her mother, which to me, Pearl would have thought it was only Joe was the biological parent and the wife wasn’t biological, but the parent who was unable to have children, so Mia stepped in as not only the person carrying the child, but also her biological mother.
Honestly, Pearl was so pissed about everything else superficial, and when she finds out her mother lied about the most basic understanding of her roots, all she could do was hug her and tell her twice that she’s her mother. Unrealistic.
Then Mia helps Bebe because she wanted to prove that she herself is worthy. Why aren’t the adoptive parents worthy, because Mia was “adoptive” too! Hypocritical. If she felt so strongly about biology, then why did she steal Pearl away from her biological parents? If Bebe is worthy due to biology, then Mia’s explanation to Pearl is wrong.
Also, the storyline of Mia going to May Ling’s birthday party was wrong on all accounts, and then she immediately tells Bebe about how she found her and then tells her their address? No accountability, no remorse on ruining these people’s lives.
Lastly, the kids burning down the house was a major let down. Did this happen in the book? I hope not or maybe it was explained better, but for teenagers to burn down their house with all their possessions, let alone everyone else’s is so unbelievable, it made me shake my head in disbelief. They were certainly smart enough to realize the damage they were about to do, while still in the moment of very emotionally clouded thinking.
Then in a sudden burst of realization of actions out of NONE presented in this whole series, Elena suddenly says she burned her house down. Really? And the kids sit in the car blaming their mother in first scene of show over how she’s probably blaming Izzy? If it was real life, those kids, who are shown as conformists during whole series, are laying blame? They should have been shaking in their boots, scared to DEATH over THEIR actions!! And that’s what they offer??
Reese plays do-gooder witch really well, just like in Big Little Lies. Kerry was great in her moments of justifying and telling what she thinks of people, but I also thought some moments were off in her emotions. Namely, when she just looks defeated at Elena when she knows that Elena told her the truth about her parentage. I would have screamed in rage and gone after Elena with my fists right there in the front yard after knowing that she revealed something so personal, interfering and so malicious.
Mostly, I loved the show, but the last episode was so poorly done, it disappointed me.
And the have and have not aspect was overdone. Whites aren’t all bad and rich and blacks aren’t all bad and poor, but the narrative made it seem excessive. Lexie’s and Brian’s characters should have been more in depth. They both were good people in what I saw, but if we’re talking black vs white narrative, then offer their back stories more.
Season 2 for clarification and present whatever happens after. Repercussions of house burning, what happens to Bebe, Mia’s parents, Pearl’s biological parents, May Ling’s adoptive parents, where Mia and Pearl end up, if they ever reach out to the Richardson’s, the whole shebang!!
