I enjoyed the film. It's a refreshing departure from the all too common formulaic tripe. I appreciated Maggie's performance. I found her to be credible as a lonely, lost and desperate person, yearning for something more than her life has become. Many have commented on her outrageous behavior. But I don't think that she is supposed to be a sympathetic character. She is obviously grooming the child to satisfy her fetish for creative genius. I don't necessarily see this as a prelude to sexual abuse as some do. Like many others, I found the child's performance to be unconvincing. This is on the director.

It's worth a watch if you're looking for a light, uplifting story. Overrated IMO. Predictable plot line. Strong cast, but mediocre performances. Gotta love Bruce Dern though, a national treasure. I know that it's not to be taken too literally, but couldn't you pay some old swamper a couple hundred bucks to explain how a shotgun works?
