Thanks to COVID-19, I finally had an opportunity to catch up on a few tv series. New Girl is a very cute and light-hearted show. I love the characters, and the writing is generally good. I even appreciated their well-meaning attempt at diversity. My only concern was the type of roles for black women in the series. While we were included, how we were portrayed as a whole was hurtful and disappointing to me. Not only does representation matter, but how specific demographics are portrayed matters just as much - if not even more so. If it weren’t for that issue, I would give the show five stars across the board.
