There are better ways to spend 20-30 hours of your life than this game. This game ignores all of the character building done in The Last of Us and turns Ellie and Joel into brand new characters that make decisions that don't logically align with how they were presented to players in the first game 7 years ago. This game could've been better if they made you play Abby's backstory at the start of the game leading up to Joel's death. The "darker" tone people claim this game haves is more of a repetitive overuse of cliched emotional fodder like pregnant women dying, dogs that you played with as Abby being killed by you later... There isn't exactly much that is emotionally profound about the actions or choices made by the characters throughout the story. The first game ended with Joel facing the classic "trolley problem" and making what could be considered a selfish choice that made the ending to the story so emotional... SPOILERS.... this one ends with "revenge bad" after you've killed almost everyone besides Abby...
TLDR: The story is weakly written and the way it tries to evoke emotion in the player is done in a very lack luster way. The game focuses on creating a sad "event" rather than experiences, atmosphere or character interactions.
