*Spoilers* Although I had no idea what to expect, I was really excited for this movie. But to my dismay, it was a huge letdown. In light of the past 3 movies, toy story 4 makes no sense. Let me explain further:
At the end of toy story 3, Andy explains to Bonnie that Woody is loyal - that he’ll never give up on you and always be there for you. The entire movie was centered around this truth and concluded with quite a beautiful, touching, and bittersweet ending. Then, for whatever reason, the writers decided to completely contradict the ending of toy story 3 and steered it so that Woody does the complete opposite at the very end and willfully abandoned Bonnie to become a lost toy. This completely contradicted all of the character development we’ve seen over the last 3 movies. If the movie was consistent, Woody would have never chosen to leave Bonnie regardless of whether he was favored or not and regardless of whether he missed Bo or not. For the movie to even suggest that Woody had already thought about abandoning Andy when Bo was being donated just completely blew my mind. It really just did a disservice and distorted Woody’s character.
It was just a really poor ending especially with all of the past lectures we’ve heard from Woody about not giving up on your kid. This movie had so much potential; and while the animation was beautiful and there were cute and funny scenes, when it comes to consistency, character development, and conclusions, they failed terribly, in my opinion.
