What a wonderful, magical
movie. Yes, of course it is incredibly cheesy, but it’s Mary’s Poppins, you wouldn’t go see it if you didn’t expect and enjoy a bit of over-the-top cheese ;) On the downside, I wasn’t blown away by Jack but the poor acting/accent didn’t seem to phase the kids and he was my 6 year olds favourite character (well, a very close second after Mary). Emily Blunt’s Mary is a bit more The Crown than the original Mary but once you get used to it, she portrays her personality and mischievousness brilliantly.
Given that I have two Avengers, football and fortnite-hooked boys (8 and 6yrs), I was not overly convinced they would enjoy it. However, they both LOVED it, a fantastic, vibrant, incredible display of raw imagination at its best. A perfect antidote to their usual viewing. We have even been playing the soundtrack on the car and they have learned the chorus to ‘The Cover Is Not The Book’, belting it out happily, full
Of smiles.
The final point is that the music is incredible. At the risk of sounding like a traitor as I did love the original soundtrack, I think it may surpass the original. The lyrics and score are so cleverly put together, conveying the perfect message and emotion for each element in such an intelligent and fun (or delicate and sad as is the case with A Conversation) way, with the occasional nod to the original. We were all completely blown away (adults and children alike) 👍👍
