A bizarre and beloved combination of sinister, slapstick, and strangely wholesome, Courage the Cowardly Dog is a show that doesn't quite fit into any specific genre. Whatever it is though, it's fantastic and freaky. As a child, you'll be creeped out by the cartoonish enemies. As an adult, you'll be creeped out by the subtle dark implications that you missed. But no matter what age you are, you'll love the wacky charm of this gem from the turn of the millennium.

(SPOILER-FREE) Let's start with the non-controversial stuff: the graphics, gameplay and sound design are spectacular. With that out of the way, let's address the elephant in the room: the story. It's a story that requires an open mind, and it's an acquired taste for many. With that being said, most of the hatred surrounding the game has very little to do with the game's flaws. While it's far from perfect, I loved the story and respect Naughty Dog for going in such a bold direction.

There's a lot to love about this game: a breathtakingly beautiful world, well-executed creative premise, and a thought-provoking setting. Gameplay is fun and leaves plenty of room for experimentation. There are some obvious design flaws and and a slow start, but it is ultimately a well-made and rewarding experience. For a company that had only made gritty sci-fi FPS games before, Guerrilla Games did a fantastic job at creating a vibrant and original Action RPG.
