As a child of the 80s this film is what I desperately wanted Lisa Frankenstein to be. I rode public transportation to the suburbs 90 minutes one way to sit in an oversized outdated multiplex to have the entire theater to myself and it was the best thing that happened to me all week!
For those who remember and still love Drop Dead Fred this is the 2024 update we didn't know we needed but have all been secretly wishing for. To those who wanted Lisa Frankenstein to be a reimagined 80s rom com, but left realizing the movie was for kids these days not kids from a few decades ago? This is the movie that redeems that movie and all the ones we want to visit but can't because the story has not aged well.
The question of the reality of the monster is questionable but the story of self acceptance is real! And the pacing and it are divine. The plot follows a pretty standard rom com, girl meets monster, they fall in love and conflict happens and they can't live without each other. Every rom com follows the same plot. But this turns it on its head and asks what love really is! And what do we deserve?
And then find your monster and fall desperately in love.
