I had so much hope after hearing about how good it is...
Top class action scenes, great VFX and amazing CGI, well choreographed Asian type fight scenes and a decent amount of suspense were well done .... But...
Spoiler alert ---
Quite disappointed with the plot, lack of character development and pockets of way too stereotypical representation of Asian culture, not to mention inconsistencies like calling the grandma waipo but addressing the dad in a very Americanised way. I mean hello growing up for 14 years with your dad in a Chinese environment... their interactions dosent seem to reflect that and it feels off for some reason, like how he called Dad dad and not 爸. Also, his death was so anti-climax and evoked zero feels. Dosen't seem like the mum imparted traditional Asian values to her children, something typical to Asian culture - except teaching him how to fight her way so he can defeat the bad guy. Hmm or I may have missed out smth.
Bit of a blah plot - thought that the pendent will be such an integral part of the story but no, just a map, oh and actual villan turned out to be some soul sucking godzilla??? SC suddenly became almighty powerful and is able to control 10 rings that has no backstory in this film - the first film of SC in MCU? The revelation of the mum's death was also bit messily unveiled
Oh also, SC's trauma and brokenness from his early years didn't seem telling. The way he dealt with the pain of watching his mum die, and what we might expect - blaming himself for mum's death and his utter determination to avenge for it, seeing traumatic killings as a little boy, and his stone cold dad treatment just didn't seem to come through in his overall character. Felt like the entire focus of the movie was just pure action. Unlike other MCUs like black widow, iron Man & spider Man, the character development was an utter disappointment.
Still, it was nice to see tony leung and Michelle yeoh.
Disappointed because this could have had way more potential for a large scale Asian themed MCU. If you're bored, I highly recommend cruella on Disney+. It was a surprising delight
