I'm sorry but this movie just has no heart. It's mechanical and generic. The book is supposed to be much better, and it's unbelievable that the author signed off on this. From a story perspective it's pervasively flawed. The characters, and protagonist in particular, are introduced with little or no development, and are so flat it's impossible to identify with any of them. The viewer is never given a chance to connect or care about any of these characters. Also from a plot perspective the stakes are never high enough to drive the plot forward, or any subplots. I have to think, this was an incredibly lazy or incompetent effort. There's an occasional attempt at cheap emotional manipulation. Overall there are just no substantial stakes, or characters you can identify with enough to care about.
