I've read that what appeared to be annoying product placement was actually just them doing bits and it wasn't paid advertising. If true, I would have appreciated that being communicated in some way (I don't know how. What am I, a documentary editor?) because I was annoyed by what I thought it was and it put me off.
I also hate when documentaries act as if their camera crews don't influence people's reactions. Supposedly, they used long distance cameras and tried to stay on the down low in the bar scene, but really? A little too "reality TV" for me.
Anyway, setting my (possibly unfair) criticisms aside: Harper was beautiful; Will seemed genuinely upset when his attention seeking put Harper on display in a way that felt exploitive; the redneck right-wing bigots were accurately portrayed as the hateful knuckle-draggers they are; and it's pride month, damnit, so five stars!
