It's one of finest novels that I've ever come across. The story is so gripping that you wouldn't be able to put down the book till you've finished it. Khalid is an excellent story teller and this masterpiece just proves it. The story revolves around two women with completely different family backgrounds and upbringing but brought together by fate to defeat a common evil. In this story, the evil is their husband. The story takes us on the journey of the hardships faced by these two women and it feels so real that you just want their misery to end with all your heart. The details of Afghanistan and the events are so finely written that you can clearly visualise it. I developed an image of Laila and Mariam in my mind while I was reading it. I'm sure you'll have the same. Khalid has so beautifully shown us the predicament of the women in Afghanistan through the eyes of Laila and Mariam that it will make you empathetic. The story is bound to take you on a roller coaster ride of emotions but leave you contended with the bittersweet ending.
