I wanted to read it after I read bright lights. I don't why it's recommended along with bright lights when these are two very different books.
The editing has been done perfectly to make the book more interesting than it is. A lot of characters are introduced in the first few chapters and confuse you till the end. You don't need to name and describe every Tom, Dick and Harry that your protaganist encounters. What is their use if they are not conveying anything substantial? Novel could have done without a lot of chahracters.
Ellis was only 19 when he wrote it and you can feel the connection as it is a story of teenagers. I don't know whether we should call it a story as it does not have that characteristic story structure that we all love so much.
It describes the activities of Clay who has returned to his home town for vacationing and one wonders why is so upset, when he is also a product of the same environment. Something has happened maybe, which repulses him from his usual crowd. His best friend Julian has become a prostitute and Clay witnesses his spiral down. Things goes more downhill when his friends rape an eleven year old and Clay can't feel anything.
As for his relations with Blair, the long lost girlfriend, Ellis doesn't give much scope to her. The book should be taken with a grain of salt , that's all I can say.
