I was so excited to hear that a live-action adaptation of the Winx club was going to come out this year. I was ready to see the super fashionable teen girls take on the magical worlds. I was ready to see the full transformations into magical glittery fairies (I’m almost 18 by the way. An 18 year old who wants to see the full glitter fantasy) AND I was especially excited to see the ethnic and racial diversity that the OG winx club had to offer.
You can imagine my disappointment when I watched the trailer and discovered that the characters were cut, the characters were played by women in their 20’s and they were white washed, and don’t even get me started on the outfits. This adaption takes on the stereotypical thought that all teens and young adults like is gore and darkness in tv shows which is absolutely not true. Half the time it this store line doesn’t even correlate to the OG material. It barely explain the Irgun of how Bloom came to be at Alfea. Not to mention the characters interactions are awkward and weird to watch. This adaptation is cringe worthy.
It was clear that this was a lower budget adaptation. I mean no disrespect to the director as I understand he did amazing work for VPD, but no creators work is amazing every time and I personally think this adaptation is a huge bust. Honestly a group of teens and young adults could have casted better, wrote the screen play better, and done the costume design better than any of the adults that worked on this show. I’m sorry if that sounds offensive but it’s true.
I hope maybe one day in the future, another adaptation can be made. A proper one, one that shows the glitter and transformations and on that stays true to the storyline and characters of the original show.
Very disappointed:/
