A Trip to Vietnam, by Dung Huỳnh, with illustrations by Anh Truong and Terry Mullen, speaks to my heart and my mind with gentle intelligence. Reading about Wei Shan and her mother draws me to imagine other mothers and children, or elders and youngsters, all over the world, reading this book together, taking an imaginary trip to Vietnam with Wei Shan to be with family whose spoken language she doesn't know but whose love draws her into their lives.
