The Village is a slow-burn periodic drama. I would say drama rather than thriller due to the film's inability to hold my attention for longer than a scene. The cast makes up for the slightly dull plot, but not enough. The ending seemed rushed and while a certain amount of predictability is acceptable, the end was very unsatisfying. The story had potential, possibly introducing more frightening elements to the film & its origins.
On the other hand, the film is beautifully shot, the acting is strong and the energy is dramatic yet not scary or unsettling. I understand M.Night Shyamalan is particularly known for creating movies that embody many different meanings and possess many layers but I couldn't even enjoy the surface plot of the movie, let alone be interested in digging deeper.
