I obtained NCA accreditation and state certification for a private school within a psychiatric hospital. Public schools began referring students who they were unable to serve. Our emphasis paralleled that of Hamada's in using individualized instruction to reinvigorate students' love of learning. Though we served primarily "emotionally disabled/conduct disordered" middle and high school students, behavior problems were minimal. Being suspended, rather than being rewarding, was felt by the students as punishment, and they quickly agreed to abding by the rules such as no swearing. In short Hamada is spot on in the noncompetitive methods of teaching. I never read any other book on creating a high quality school that even came close to the wisdom of her advice.
