This isn't the worst prequel to a great movie ever. Look at Star Wars for that. But it is so average compared to the original it's actually distracting. It's not actually a terrible movie. There are some things I actually like a lot, such as the performances of the actors and the designs of the creatures, as well as the fun and creative ways that it explains the devastation found in the original movie. I thought the backstory behind Split-Face and the guy who killed himself were particularly fun to watch, but some things really irritated me, like the reliance on CGI for basically every aspect of the monsters. The Thing (1982) is a timeless classic, and I think that this movie could've been the same if it had taken the same practical route. But it didn't. I would've preferred to have seen the four hour mini-series come to fruition, but I am kind of glad that they made this movie instead of leaving the franchise to collect dust. An average at best explanation and addition to this universe is better than none. I prefer the comics and video game as a continuation, but I can see effort was put into this movie and I appreciate that. It's more of a half of the third star, but Google doesn't let you do that, so hey. The last ten minutes or so is also quite stupid while not being particularly bad or unwatchable, but the final twist and ambiguous note is kind of interesting.
