Seems like an ok but ultimately lightweight, Sunday afternoon comedy of manners.
Steve Martin does his best to make his father character work, but he can only do so much with the irritatingly petulant, possessive, over-protective and over-controlling, jealous man-child, who simply can't accept that his daughter has grown up, and he's growing old.
I'm sure it all worked out in the end, with lots of laughs, and lessons learned, along the way to a doubtlessly schmaltzy Hollywood finale - I just couldn't be bothered to stick with it that long.
I'm just amazed there was a sequel.
