Great acting, story and special effects. I know that this movie was drastically cut in length by the studio, and that Tom Hanks was not happy about the deleted footage. It is obvious in several scenes that cuts have been made (as in, "Who is this officer, and what is the origin of the conflict between him and Tom Hanks?"). Because of the deleted material, this is a nearly non-stop action movie, with little or no time for character development. Unfortunately, it's difficult to connect with the crew members when nothing is known about them; they're all basically the same guy (except the seaman who sneezes when he's trying to relay a message to Hanks). There is obviously tension on the deck between Hanks and the crew, but we never really know why. I highly recommend this movie, and I think it would certainly warrant five stars if the deleted material was restored. Still really good, but it could have been even better!
