I have to say I was disappointed. It was all psychological but the flashbacks that are meant to explain Ma's behavior barely do so. There are definitely missing links in the chain of events that lead up to her horrific actions. The storyline with her daughter is completely undeveloped. There are a lot of plot holes in this movie. Overall, it was boring. There was not enough suspense for it to be an interesting thriller, nor was there enough horror for it to fit neatly under the category "horror." Really, it's just a twisted psychological drama that begs further explanation.

I've been studying the book and was horribly disappointed in this movie. It was nothing like the book. A lot of what made the book a Nobel Prize winner was lost in the movie. The first thing that really bothered me was the presence of an adult, which is in direct opposition to the entire basis of the book, which reiterates that there are NO adults in sight from the time they land on the island. Also, changing the characters appearances and huge gaping plot holes... I think this movie should be remade properly.
