So, I watched #Midnightmass on Netflix. The story is very intriguing, but yes extremely problematic as it serves an agenda.
At the very beginning, we come to know that Riley has lost his faith in Catholicism, and has studied so many religions: Quran, Torah, Talmud, Buddhism, Jain, and even Tao...but not a single time he mentions that he has studied Hinduism. Now, why does that matter? that matters because, in the USA, Tao is not much celebrated (it is already a dying religion in China, where it is limited to scholarly research only), but Hindus are quite large in number in America. Yet, Hinduism or a single Hindu character is not present in the entire series (yet Netflix propagates that, representations matter). Another thing that literally disturbed me in this whole series is that- the deliberate violation of Christian philosophy...in contrast to ISLAM.
It's like the whole series focuses on the harsh life of sheriff Hassan, who proclaims in episode four that, Bible was distorted by Popes, Kings, Padres, but the Quran is the most authentic religious book on Jesus's life.
In the series, it is shown that Muslims are quite open about learning new religions, but Christians are not.
This series shows how glorious it is to pray the Namaz, but how dark and evil is the sacrament.
This series deliberately shows that the Christians worship the wrong God (nearly depicted Jesus as a vampire) but, having faith in Allah is perfect for faithful people.
The Holy Mystery of Sacrament, the concept of eternal life in Christianity and the whole bible is mocked, portrayed as evil-but, Islam is the "final perfect message of God...".
The only thing good in this series is the last dialogue between Erin and Riley, where the Hebrew name of God "Yahweh" is explained.
(Now that too seemed problematic, as in the whole series, the words of Jesus are shown diabolically. I mean, this series tries to establish, worshipping Jesus is wrong, so one should worship the "One God". Erin literally utters the word "One". )
At the very end, we see Hassan and his son is praying namaz, and the Christians are burned alive because they all have become vampires by partaking in the eucharist of the wrong Jesus.
The evilness of the Christian community is more than perfectly portrayed, but Muslims are the victims in the Christian nation is also highlighted.
#Midnightmass is all about how wrong the Christian faith is, but how right and miserable the Muslims are.
And do not forget, Erin's dialogue with Riley is about "life is a dream" and "I am who I am" is completely the Advaita philosophy, yet Hinduism is not mentioned for a single time.
I'm giving it three stars because I enjoyed the show. But, this series does not serve only a horror or psychological theme, but also serves an agenda.
