For all its pre-launch buzz, Ad Astra is a bit underwhelming. I wasn’t bored, but the film fails to leave a lasting impression. The story is flat with few surprises. The best plot point (spoiler alert) occurs when Pitt’s character makes a successful last ditch effort to board a rocket as it’s launching. Great ‘edge of your seat’ stuff spoiled by a nagging sense that this feat is not supported by any known law of physics. Kudos also for lensing what I believe is film’s first car chase on the Moon. Brad Pitt is solid in the role, authentic in every step of the journey...and it’s a long one. At the end I’m left wondering; “...so what?”
