If I had a subscription to the New Yorker when this came out, I would have cancelled my subscription as many did after reading this Gothic dark tale told like a fairy tale except at the end the princess does not live happily ever after. Unlike Princess Bride, this would be titled Princess Died! Reading that many educators want this to be read by High School students is more scary than the story itself as I am an adult in my 50's and this story is depressing to me. This story makes one feel utter hopelessness and as the authors own mother complained, "can't you write something to cheer people up?" Or as Bambi's Thumper quoted his own Mother, "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all." Some stories are written and the world is a better place for it, this is NOT one of those stories. Wish I hadn't read.
