This game was honestly such an incredible game from the graphics to the actual story. Considering the Last of Us 1 set the bar extremely high for this second game, I feel like this game is definitely worse than the first one, but is still a game I would recommend. This full review will contain a few spoilers so read ahead at your own risk.
Let’s start by addressing why I don’t feel like it deserves a 5 star rating. Joel was killed off like he was nothing, 2 hours in, without any buildup and without getting to see that father and daughter relationship he has with Ellie, so when he dies, sure it was emotional, but it just felt like they didn’t really care about him in the slightest.
Throughout the story there’s a part where you play as Abby and you have to fight Ellie, which confused me because I felt no emotional connection with Abby at all, and I would’ve much rather preferred to play as Ellie during that encounter, even if it meant Abby would still win the fight, just like how David in the last of us 1 won the encounter but got killed by Joel.
The ending of the story is very dragged out where you have to fight Abby, and the ending cutscene had little to no meaning at all, the constant flashbacks to Joel in the form of memories just seemed like a lazy way of trying to keep the player emotional about losing Joel and that seemed strange to me, seeing as we didn’t really get to spend a lot of time with Joel in this game.
Now the price, was it worth the £50? For a linear game that takes 17-25 hours to complete, and a game that doesn’t have multiplayer, I would personally say it is slightly overpriced for what we actually got out of this game, but it’s definitely still worth buying and playing.
On a positive note. The character development of Abby is incredible in this game, although at the start you’re practically told to hate her, during the scenes you get to play with her, you really start to understand her perspective on why she killed Joel.
