What an absolutely amazing achievement. Saw this this afternoon and was totally blown away. Apart from Jackson's obsession with WWI, his attention to detail in creating this is incredible. For example, using professional lip readers to determine what people in the footage were saying, then finding actors to generate a vocal synced with the film. Together with the film enhancement technology (getting the frame rates sorted out and matched up to today's standards), image saturation corrected, and then colorized made the film look like it had been shot recently. The archived oral history recitations from actual WWI veterans (from 50+ years ago) describing life from enlistment through rotation into the trenches really brought the story to life.
I only wish the other aspects of the time and war (described in the "making of" segment following the credits) could receive the same treatment and be shown!
