The concept is interesting. The tone is good. The music is strong. That's about where it ends. This show fails to make me care about these characters. Every turn is either predictable or facepalm inducing. If you think The Magicians is good sci-fi/fantasy episodic story telling, this is not going to live up to that. The writing is pretty awful with some painful inconsistencies in the story. They thwart a crew of organized villains as children in one episode, then are smacked down by an overweight dude and a chick with a 'tude and a tommy gun in the next? The story arcs are just tired. WE GET IT: ELLEN PAGE'S CHARACTER DOESN'T HAVE POWERS. WE GET IT: THEY ALL TURNED OUT DAMAGED AND MALADJUSTED. WE GET IT; FAMILY IS FOREVER. And yes, Ellen Page delivers a believable performance. But this show isn't the next great superhero story you want it to be.
