Another Netflix dud from Ryan Murphy. This one was at least watchable compared to the other two (the smug and unfunny Politician and the absurd Hollywood). Murphy shows tend to operate with limited margin between sincerity and camp which makes for extreme hits and misses as seen in earlier efforts like Popular and Nip/Tuck. Ratched continues down this path but in a sadly haphazard way that renders each twist and turn forgettable. As usual this show looks exquisite but it cannot completely cover the emptiness of it all. That it squanders an iconic villain who has succeeded on the page, stage and film would be a crying shame if it weren't so lackadaisical as to make one forget this has any connection with One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest. Indeed many viewers will probably assume this is an original character which makes the repurposing of Nurse Ratched even more pointless.
