Casting, direction, cinematography, soundtrack... everything is spot-on. Esp. JC is an absolute eye candy and does justice to both the innocence of Edmond Dantes and the shrewdness of the Count (much of the reason why I have watched it repeatedly :3). Guy Pierce slayed his role as a sly antagonist. Their duo reminds me of Chris Bale and Russell Crowe in 3:10 to Yuma, such is their chemistry. The choreography of the swordfight was spectacular as well. The whole movie was so indulging that I have rewatched even the prison scenes time and again.
I understand the frustration of the book fandom (being one myself) but this wouldn't be the first movie to be 'loosely based' on the source material. The one objection, however, that I have is against the romance b/w Dantes and Mercedes. Seemed like fan service. Also, the revenge seemed to be rushed as compared to Dantes' escape.
