Was truly surprised by this one. Came across it on Netflix, and didn’t have high expectations for it. But I was on the edge of my seat quite a bit. I really admired how I felt an arc of pure disdain for Marla at the begging of the film, peaking with a little empathy and actually rooting for her in the middle, and finally morally resolved at the end with a harsh reality check for Marla. Our actions have consequences.
Though the premise of the film itself is quite outlandish and not based much in realty. It plays on a fear we all have of having our liberties grossly infringed upon, and it does it in a way that hasn’t been done dozens of time. I give five stars for the entertainment, the uniqueness of the premise, and it’s ability to really make me take uncomfortable look at myself and the reality of the world we live in.
Heavy subject matter, intensity, and some mild satire. If this isn’t your thing, go watch Frozen. It’s disappointing to see so many negative marks. The film is rated R. If you can’t handle rated R, don’t watch it then give it one star. Also, it’s entertainment. It’s not a documentary, or a dramatic reenactment. It’s entertainment, if you are so unable to have your disbelief suspended for less than two hours, I genuinely feel bad for you. What a tragedy it must be to never be able to escape reality for even a brief moment. Even this movie has polarized the ratings to an extreme…pick a side a guess. One side is filled with admiration and enjoyment, the other with complaints and hatred. You choose!
