I wish there was a middle choice between like and dislike because it was just ok.
It did have some positive messages but a lot of the stuff to show that Will was the type of person who didn’t let people’s perceptions of her because of her weight were shallow. Much of her experience seemed mild to what many have experienced and she was experiencing the best possible scenario for a fat girl. Even the “bullying” was tame and didn’t have meaning other than reminding viewers that people are sometimes mean to her, or mostly people around her.
I don’t know how much the movie tried to pull from the book but, the movie at least seemed more like what a skinny person thinks life is for a fat person. Especially when Will’s friend said “I never thought of you as fat.”
Fat is not a bad word, fat doesn’t mean ugly, awful, or unhealthy(VERY dependendant on the reason for why someone is fat) or other words people seem to associate with it. Will is fat that’s just the truth but it would have been more interesting if she owned up to it. But instead we get a side plot of Will “skinny-shaming” her friend.
Also the romance could have just been replaced with a sexy lamp. It was 10000% not needed and didn’t add anything to the plot. I guess it was supposed to be “fat girls can be loved too”? But regardless the relationship plot was a waste of time that they could have filled it with almost anything else.
Overall it wasn’t bad and I’ll commend it for almost giving a story that was just about a girl who happened to be fat. But the execution of the theme was bad.
