I like many, only turned to watch this because of Jodie Comer’s performance in Killing Eve. I wasn’t sure I would even bother as this was meant for a younger UK teen audience. I’m glad I did though, as British television is far grittier than American, and there are many heavier topics and events that occur. Annoying childish graphics aside, the prevailing topic is sex, and relationships. But within that is a complex web of mental health, eating disorders, self harm, self esteem and the basic coming of age story of finding oneself. Set in 1996, the show captures the environment perfectly.
The lead in this show is Sharon Rooney(Rae) who won a Scottish Bafta for her performance for the final season. She is in every scene as the story is told from her POV. But Jodie Comer’s performance also shines through as Rae’s best friend Chloe. While there are 6 main friends in this show, I would argue this show is very much about Rae and Chloe’s interaction with the other four. Particularly another boy named Finn who they are competing for.
Jodie Comer is given heavy screen time. Particularly in the second season, her character is fleshed out to a degree that only works if she can get the audience to care for her character. I greatly did to the point of tearing up during a pivotal moment as I felt Jodie’s characters pain. Her acting is excellent and the seeds of greatness are definitely visible in a 19 year old Jodie Comer. Particularly impressive is that this character is nothing at all like Villanelle. It along with Thirteen are must watch for Jodie Comer fans as they help display Jodie’s limitless range.
Even for those who don’t care for Jodie Comer, they should know the show itself was beloved and a recommended watch before anyone knew who Jodie Comer was. Also while I could not take my eyes off of Jodie, another viewer could also feel the same about any of the other colorful characters on the show.
