I feel like the people who praise and "love" Death Stranding probably have just gotten their first taste of surrealism. They finally have an opportunity to indulge in sophisticated story telling so it's really exciting for them. What they don't see is that Death Stranding was Kojima's attempts to make an art film/game. Now, I love myself a good slow build up to stories. The rewards are always freakin awesome in the end. That is, when writers know what the hell they're doing to build it up. Artsy fartsy can only go so far, but this game was just a huge clunky mess of pretentious storytelling that Hollywood would even cringe at. Hours of walking through beautiful scenery can only be so entertaining. At first, I enjoyed getting lost in the awesome green mountainous scenery. But even for the most patient audience, that can only go so far. Then there's the cheesy music that plays without your consent that feels so out of place. You have to mute it if you want to drown it out. Each character felt as though they were force-fed dialogue and even they had some of the cheesiest lines I've ever heard. This is one of the few games I kept thinking, "when will this get good?" As I pushed my way to the end. Unfortunately that never came. An ending that was supposed to feel satisfying felt extremely lackluster because the character development flat out sucked and the gameplay wasn't challenging enough to make me feel accomplished. You want a game that will leave you floored with gameplay and story and actually make you cry in the end because they did something very revolutionary? Go back to the 2017 catalog and play Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. That game is very much a fantastic work of art while being extremely engaging during gameplay. Kojima can learn a lot from devs like Ninja Theory.
