I have never read this book. I'm not going to tell you that this movie is dissimilar from the source material, but this movie was so laughable.
No character development. Dom died and I was like... Who is this guy?
Juliet is just there because Mulch expositions her there.
Speaking of Mulch, how did he know so much? He was only in Artemis' life for like 30 minutes and then he escaped into the ground. He has the authority to narrate and exposition every detail of Arty's life?
When the troll attacked the house, there is no reason why Holly and Mulch is all-of-a-sudden war-buddies with Artemis and willing to die at their side. She could literally walk out. The rescue mission was for her in the first place.
The climax was the biggest mcguffin I have ever seen. I assume they were planning on making a second movie since Opal was just left saying NOOOOOO! No conclusion. I have a feeling there won't be.
It was a fever dream of the movie.
If you made it this far, let me explain how this could have been great.
A series. 10 episodes per season. Each season goes over one book. I understand there are several books. In this way, Disney could have expanded on the characters and their relationships. The nuances of Artemis' genius could have been SHOWN and not TOLD to us by a big dwarf to whom we have no emotional connection.
Oh well. I don't know why they keep making full length movies out of multi-book series, but I fear that Hollywood will never learn.
