I don't know how I can give a review for all three seasons at the same time. They're all so starkly different. I'm gonna go all over the place, here.
Truly, I think Aziz is a terrible actor and everything he does seems very hollow. I don't see him embodying the emotions of his character throughout all the seasons. When he's telling jokes he looks the most comfortable. In Season 3, I became so put off by Aziz doing the trick of looking down and shaking his body to look like he was laughing at something that Lena's character's said, that I was completely taken out of what I was watching (it's when they're sitting upstairs by Lena's reading nook).
The ending of season 2 with the beautiful Italian actress having to feign an undeniable attraction to Aziz was off-putting. As many others have said, it most definitely looked like Aziz wanted to make out with a beautiful woman and that's about it. The storyline completely lost me and I felt more and more frustrated while watching. Eric Wareheim, Alessandra Mastronardi and the Thanksgiving ep saved me from thinking season 2 was a total write-off.
At the start of season 3, I thought I was going to see a pure queer love story with not that much drama. Whoops! I still loved it though. I binged the whole thing. I want to watch so much more of what Naomi Ackie has to offer. For me, I appreciated that it showed a queer relationship that wasn't all pain or all pleasure. So many queers stay entangled in some way or another after a break-up; it's realistic. I thought Lena Waithe seemed a little wooden in parts but I still wanted to know what she had to say...
Overall, it was an at times frustrating show but I still appreciated it. If there's a season 4, maybe we could focus on Arnold?
