I tried to watch this movie, but it was too painful. That such overtly racist and harmful portrayals of African Americans as subhumans were not only acceptable but celebrated by mainstream culture - breaks my heart - especially at a time when lynching and racist riots were at an all time high. The connection is unmistakable. Anti-Black bias maintained and perpetuated since slavery and carried on into the early C20, continues to thrive in C21. I will have to watch the 1980 Neil Diamond version to be able to get through the story. Watching folks celebrate blackface can be as traumatic for African Americans as watching men celebrate rape can be for women.
