I think what the production saved on not paying for decent writers for their contrived confusing plot, and what appeared to be a borrowed set from 1917 movie, they instead poured into marketing and internet shills.
It's a bad sign when the main marketed character has maybe 10-20 minutes of playtime and dies half way through.
