As an American, with not much knowledge of Irish history, I am intrigued by the reviews of the Irish critics here who do know the history and much more. It seems they are highly critical of the show, for seemingly good reasons, like the accents, which I couldn't tell were poor.
I found the show entertaining and also loved Peaky Blinders. This shouldn't be compared to it. PB had great characters, actors and compelling story lines, the latter which this show just hinted at. I did find the history interesting, motivating me to read up on the actual history of the Guiness family.
Where I do agree with most reviewers was the god awful choice and volume of the music. I hit the mute button often. Midway they did lighten up and chose better and more appropriate music of the time.
The salty dialouge of the Guiness family seemed unauthentic, as did the blantenly gay brother and his relation to his wife. The Feins were intriguing and more could have been made of that.
Anyway, it only lasted 8 episodes so it ended quickly.
