Feels like they ignore parts of the book that personally stuck out as big plot points to me. Not only was I incredibly disappointed in the casting, but they changed details of the story that could have easily stayed the same.
Why the hell was the movie starting off with them on top of a bridge? Could they seriously not find a bell tower? Not super integral in the end I guess but...come on! I don't know, but even SUPER tiny things bug me in this film. Like Finch asking Violet to be partners *out loud* in class in the book, or I'm pretty sure the book said he folded his clothes *neatly* by the rocks in the end. ??? It's not difficult to film and they gained absolutely nothing from changing it. They had no reason (that I can see, at least) to mess with most of the things they changed. It's honestly annoying but, again, not super integral...I guess.
THE CASTING... I really, truly, honestly think the movie would have just *felt* 10x better to watch if they just picked the right actor for Finch. I'm not talking about most comments I've seen, I don't care if he's black, whatever, but he just doesn't give off any of the vibes that Finch does while reading the book. And the fact they excluded the whole string of him changing his styles was disappointing as well, it was just one of those things i would've enjoyed seeing because he kinda shifts his own personality to fit them throughout the book, he's trying to find his place. Even Violet felt just a smidge too aggressive for her role. Granted I could always use a refresher, but when I read ATBP she never gave me many angry tones, yet Violet seems to be annoyed or frustrated too often. That's definitely nit-picky, but I figured I'd include it.
The fact that this was one of my favorite books just really rubs salt in the wound. Had low expectations but they honestly should have been lower.
Let me just reiterate if you've made it this far - These are only *my* opinions on the things *I* noticed. In no way am I aiming to convey anything else. I may also have recalled things from the book that are different from truth, and feel free to correct me if so. :)
