Rating: 😞 Not Good
This could have been a great film.
The plot is is weak. There's no character building.
Keke Palmer plays a female pimp, Wednesday, who takes over the business after the death of her father (DMX). As a kid, she falls in love with a girl named Nicki, who later becomes one of her girls.
Low on money after bailing her drug addict mother out of jail, she pimps out Nicki who brings in more money in four hours than all of the othe girls combined.
Wednesday goes to a local strip club, encouraged by her friend Science, and recruites a dancer, Destiny, who becomes her top earner. She starts to focus more on making money with her, leaving Nicki to manage the other two girls working the corners. Destiny makes it clear that she's number one and makes Wednesday demote Nicki. Desperate to keep the money train roling, she let's Destiny know "It won't happen again." Destiny tried that same move with her last pimp and things didn't go as well.
As tensions rise between Destiny and Nicki, Destiny's old pimp comes for her. He offers Wednesday a spot on his team. When she declines he takes Destiny, leaving his boy to handle Wednesday. He attempts to rape her and she kills him.
Fear of retaliation from Kenny, Destiny's pimp, she attempts to leave town with Nicki. Barely off the block, they're ambushed by Kenny. Nicki and Wednesday are both shot in the shoot out before Nicki kills Kenny. Nicki drives them away from the scene, stopping at the place where they used to play as kids. They both succumb to their injuries looking into each other's eyes.
Like I said , this could have been a good film. I think Keke was miscast. The plot could have been stronger. They could have worked more on character building. There's no connection to the characters. Though it's based in New York, the city isn't a character in the film. It's all about Wednesday wanting to make money but for what, other than just to come up in the game, it's not clear.
Aunjanue Ellis, who plays Wednesday's mother, gave a great performance. I found myself wanting to know more about her character than anyone else. He final scene in jail before Wednesday leaves was powerful. I wish I could say the same for the rest of the cast.
