I started watching this series keeping GOT in mind but after 1st episode I realized that the series should be watch on its own merit. Even without comparison, season 1 is pathetic. I will list down my observation :
1. Cast selection: Pathetic job done. Actors were not selected as per the story line and set up but were selected based on their personality. Personality wise kunal kapoor fits the role of a warrior prince but his acting skills are so bad that supporting actors dominate him completely. Most of the actors struggled with Urdu dialogues including lead actor and soon I lost interest.
2. Storyline: Most of the indians knew mughal history as there are no. of texts available about this dynasty. Any mistake in the story line is tough for us to digest. I found many deviations from real story in season 1 such as
a) Babur was known as a military genius and ruthless in battle but in this season, babur was shown as weak military leader with no battle plans and won battles by stroke of luck including battle of panipat 1. Tough to relate such character with a conqueror.
b) Shaibani khan was a fearsome warrior and under his command uzbeks were a force to reckon. Babur never defeated him and actually he fled to kabul to save his life. Shaibani was defeated by persian shah without babur's help. In this season, it was shown that babur defeated shaibani khan with help from his sister who has sent some secret message to babur. Again deviation from history to glorify the lead actor.
c) Lodhi dynasty was struggling as lodhi royal family members were against ibrahim lodhi. Lodhi's uncle and brothers wanted the empire for themselves. They asked for babur's help to win delhi for themselves but babur won delhi and never returned to kabul. But in this series, It was shown that conquering India was babur's childhood dream. In baburnama, babur mentioned that he misses samarkand and wanted to return. He has not shown any special love for delhi when compared to kabul or samarkand. In fact, he died in agra but was buried in kabul as per his wishes.
d) Use of Gunpowder and canons: Gun powder was invented by turks. In real life, Babur hired turkish Ustad ali kuli in his army and his army was well trained with the usage of canons. In this series, it was shown that babur's friend qasim learns gun powder technology from turks and also buys canons and gun powder from turks (though he was penniless after babur expels him from the country). He introduces this technology to babur 1 day before the battle of panipat, trains soldiers in 24 hours and babur wins the war.
I am amazed that how such a high profile drama series had so many deviations from the real story. Hope they will take help from some historians in upcoming seasons.
