Steve Cary took on the job of researching Winslow Howard through letters, newspaper articles and even advertisements to glean a life lived. Winslow Howard had contracted consumption, and like many with TB came West to Santa Fe for healing. A jeweler back East he continued his trade but developed assay methods and followed Gold strikes in the West. Having a family he travelled back and forth, through Indian Country, but eventually was forced to stay in the West for health reasons. His wide ranging interests also included being a naturalist and he identified several species collecting and sending new finds to schools in the East. Steve Cary provides an excellent read and biography of a renaissance man finding his way in the West during the 19th Century.
