Ingrid Bergman sculpted the role of Gerda ingeniously. A wonderful work by her. Lead actress oscar worthy performance.

This film is excellent. Its main theme is integrity, consideration, and ultimately love.

It was one dimentional all around, unfortunately: dialogues are so unnatural, good actors are wasted, and direction is also wrong: Ray is a good director, but here he isn't good at all. First 10 to 20 minutes are good but what followed, nit convincing. Walter Matthau's character is somewhat deeply involved in the family struggle, and not showing him in the last scene at the hospital is wrong.

I believe Bette Davis tried to save this film. Perhaps tried too much: nothing works here. So much talking going on. Less would have been better.

There isn't an unnecessary scene in this well crafted film. I would say this collaboration between William Wyler and Bette Davis is far better than Jezebel all around.

Very well written, and very well acted. I was ready to be a bit bored (what can happen to two men in a remote lighthouse?), but it was far from it. Thoroughly enjoyable, and it gives you a vast blank which you can fill with your own imagination and intellect. This young film maker shows us what even an older one would have a few bumps to tell. Highly recommended.

Excellent film making. It avoid ls giving us the feel of dramatic rendition of that part of history, and succeeded telling the story as happened. It is an earnest film making. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
