Awful. Just awful. The non-chronological timeline in the first several episodes is off putting and near-impossible to follow, and I’ve read the book four times. I pity those who haven’t read the book. And the character interpretations were mostly misses for me.
SPOILERS AHEAD
The ultra-late introduction of Trashcan Man is baffling and the character’s over the top speech impediment makes him difficult to understand. When Nadine begins her descent into madness, the physical manifestation is depicted with amateurish make up, though the fetus crawling inside her womb is suitably creepy. Tom Cullen was played very well by Brad Willam Hencke and is a spot on portrayal for me. It took me several episodes to appreciate the creepiness of Harold Lauder, though I was disappointed they couldn’t portray his growth from doughy teen to confident, evil, antagonist.
As for the plot, it seems they focus too much on unimportant bits and not enough on key plot points. I’ve only watched to the second to last episode, but it’s pacing seems labored, and I was frankly amazed (and disappointed) when I got to the end and realized there was another hour left.
All in all, a big disappointment. :-( I’ll watch the final episode out of curiosity, but I’m not optimistic.
