For those trying to understand why the Earth wasn't ripped apart, the fountain isn't "protected" and the earth isn't spinning insanely fast because the fountain is acting like a black hole. The closer you are to the center, the slower time flows according to those furthest away. Which is why the cowboy doesn't seem to move when professor Hopper first sees him until he gets closer.
