The jolly music is a total miss, and the first bloody death comes out of nowhere and turns an otherwise boring period film into a graphic thriller. There's a severe lack of suspense and the ghosts are almost comical in appearance. The final action sequence lacked satisfaction, so the ending felt ubrupt and unfinished. The film is undeniably beautiful and the costume design nicely exaggerated the women's period fashion. The performances were beautiful although some extra characters had some questionable accents! I love the gothic style and Del Torro's work, but this was not one of my favourites.
