Bill Bryson is most effective and charming when he is self effacing and informative. In The Road to Little Dribbling there are passages that retain this, but there are also many more passages that cause inward (and outward) cringing. His confusion and revulsion for pop culture, his maltreatment of minimum wage employees... It's all unfortunately very 'Boomer.'
