Weapons had a good story — don’t get me wrong — but I honestly laughed more than I got scared. The acting was solid; every actor and actress really committed to their roles and gave believable performances. My issue wasn’t with the cast at all, it was the tone. It felt like the movie couldn’t quite decide if it wanted to be psychological horror or dark comedy. Some scenes were tense, but others were just unintentionally funny, and it kind of threw off the vibe.
I did like the mystery behind it and the way the story slowly unraveled, but for a horror movie, it just didn’t deliver the level of suspense or fear I was expecting. The “plot twist” was interesting, but honestly, I saw it coming from early on. The second Justine peeked through the newspaper-covered window, I knew it had something to do with Alex or Alex’s family. Maybe that’s just from watching too many horror movies, but the build-up gave it away. Overall, Weapons had potential, and I can appreciate the creativity and direction behind it. It’s definitely watchable and entertaining in its own way, just not the nightmare inducing type of horror it’s marketed as. If you go in expecting a mix of eerie moments and unintentional laughs, you’ll probably enjoy it more.
