I would give this movie a solid 3.25 stars (I refuse to round up) because it lacked a certain 'je ne sais quoi" that the first film had. I constantly think about this franchise...when I see a tanning bed, when I see a logging truck, when I see a roller coaster. And I enjoy rewatching them, especially the first 3.
In the first films (before the psycho blonde (played by Ali Larter) became the unlikeable center of attention), the characters were always putting together a puzzle, piecing together clues about how death works, seeing signs, and despite all of that, you never really knew who was going to die and who was going to be saved.
I found this newest movie tried make a half-assed effort to do the same, but it fell short. I never really liked most of the characters (except the crazy grandma and her younger self). I was too distracted by thoughts of, "That lady looks like Jennifer Coolidge" and "Why does the main female character look Hispanic when her father is Asian?" and "Oh!! That is the kid from Hook!"
The female cousin was a bitch to the main character from the get-go but it never explains why. The dad's acting was subpar and awkward. It was predictable. TOOOOO predictable. And maybe that is why it did not grab me. It did make me jump a couple of times, the special effects were on par, and the action never stopped much. But I guess what was lacking was any emotional connection to the characters. I didn't care when they died. And that is a problem. 🤷🏽♀️
Oh, and the decision to have the creepy Candy Man be the little black child all grown up was a TERRIBLE casting decision. I probably would have liked the movie a lot more if the adult was equally as cute and likeable and felt indebted enough to Iris for saving HIS life to help her family save theirs. The script writer and casting directors get two big 👎🏽👎🏽. This movie was NOT fun. The first one was a blast.
